Flying Fairies
Good morning everyone!
This is the card that we are going to be making today. I hope you enjoy it; it is going to be the first of many (hopefully!) Sugar Buttons themed projects that I'm going to share with you.
You will need:
Spellbinders SBS5-025 Labels Seventeen Nestabilities
Pre-scored 6x6 card (& envelope/box)
Distress Ink pad & tools (I will be using Broken China)
Co-ordinating backing card
Sugar Buttons toppers (I will be using 900923 Fairy Dust)
Embellishments eg. ribbon, webbing, flowers etc.
I have laid everything out below:
The backing card that I have chosen, as you can see, is a piece of pale blue sherbet pips card from the Sugar Buttons cardstock collection; a piece of Kanban Deep Blue for matting; and a piece of Sugar Buttons blue Gingham from the kit. Of course, you can use different card if you choose.
Step One: Die-cutting
Using the largest two dies from the Labels Seventeen Nestabilities set, cut a large shape out of the Deep Blue card (this card comes in A3 so you will have to trim down according to the machine you are using).
Use the smaller die to shape the Sugar Buttons topper. Take care with placing the die so as not to cut off too much of the image. Secure with low-adhesive tape if necessary.
While you have the dies handy, you can cut a matting layer for the sentiment that will go inside the card. I chose the 'Sending you Fairy Birthday Wishes' sentiment. You will notice that the shape of the Labels Seventeen dies mean that you can't re-shape the sentiment tile so I chose to create a smaller piece. You will see the finished effect later on.
Set the sentiment pieces to one side for now.
Step Two: Trimming the Front
Using 3D foam or silicone glue depending on your preference, secure the Sugar Buttons topper to the Deep Blue die-cut shape.
With the hinge of the card at the top, line the base point of the topper up with the base of the 6x6 card. Use a light pencil line to mark where to trim the card front. The line will fall at approximately 4.5-5cm.
Using the pencil line as a guid, trim the excess from the front of the card and set aside.
The finished result should look like this:
Step Three: Punching & Distressing
With a border punch, decorate the front lip of the card. I have chosen an EK Success Edger punch; EK54-40017 Scroll & Dots but any decent border punch will do.
Sorry for the rotated angle; I edited the image to alter the angle but unfortunately it hasn't recognised it. Hopefully you get the general idea.
Once you have punched the trimmed edge and made it look pretty you are ready to Distress the front. Lay the card on a piece of scrap paper to protect your work surface and, using a blending tool, go around the edges of the front with liberal strokes, including the punched area.
I have used the TIM21414 Broken China Distress Ink pad which makes a nice contrast against the Deep Blue mats we made earlier, but you can use whatever Distress Ink that will co-ordinate with your project.
Your distressing technique doesn't matter so don't worry about not being able to do it 'properly'. My technique certainly isn't the best as you can see but most of the area will be covered by the backing card. The point is to dumb down the stark white colour.
Step Four: Preparing the Backing Card
This picture on the left shows the backing card pieces that you're going to need for this step. The smaller two pieces are going to decorate the front of the card and the larger Gingham panel is going to be fixed to the inside.The front lip of the card measures approximately 14.7x8.5cm (check your own personal measurements just in case there is a difference). Don't count the punched area in your measurements.
Trim the Deep Blue matting panel and the blue Sherbet Pips according to your individual taste (some people like leaving a larger border than others). Once you are happy with the result, mount the blue Sherbet Pips card to the Deep Blue mat but DON'T tape them to the front of the card yet.
The blue Gingham from the Sugar Buttons kit needs to be trimmed so that it covers the entire face of the inside of the card (approximately 14.8x14.8cm, but check your own card).
Once you are happy with the trimmed pieces it is time to mount them.
Decide if you want to embellish the front of the card with ribbon, webbing, lace etc before taping it down, like the picture below;
Again, sorry for the rotated angle.
On this example, I trimmed the front of the card with a piece of webbing, leaving approximately half-an-inch on each side to secure round the back. Then I mounted the panel to the front lip of the card.
The blue Gingham should fit snugly.
Step Five: Fixing the Topper & Sentiment
Using 3D foam or silicone glue on the top half of the topper only, secure it to the front of the card over the webbing. Make sure that the base point of the topper lines up with the bottom of the card.
With double-sided tape or a tape roller, secure the sentiment tile to its backing piece and secure them both to the inside face of the card in a position of your choice. Make sure that the sentiment is covered by the topper on the front of the card so as not to diminish the effect.
Step Six: Titivating
Using embellishments of your choice (I just used manufactured flowers and a hot glue gun), trim up and titivate the front of your card to your own personal taste.
